i love the opening of our time capsules. It really is very interesting and fun, a great start to the the exhibition!

In the end my focus is on palmistry or palm reading. I set up my exhibition in such a way that our classmates and those who went for the exhibition can have a better understanding of palm reading.
The fun part is to try reading their own palms and their friends palms.

Here’s the series and the 2 posters!

A section of the set up teaches people how to make their own hand prints!
The lines in our palms are always changing, it’s always interesting to keep a record of your palm prints!

Our fellow groupmates trying it out!

And with the handprints, they do a match with the Palmistry Information Boards to find out what the lines on their palms say

And images of the Archive as such!

Sadly due to time constrain, really have to decide on something soon. and narrow them down.

Also because the amount of information that i have to take in since it’s kind of a fairly new divination method to me o_o

I have 2 questions. 2 different direction. I can’t decide which to take.

Divination is slowly becoming a ‘fading tradition’.
This is partially due to how contemporary divination is being told. For example,  horoscope and zodiac. How they are being mentioned as a generalisation makes people skeptical and take them on a surface level.

Divination is being narrowed down to just palmistry.

2 takes. 2 directions.

1.

inform people about how palmistry is being done. so that they will have this knowledge and go around trying on their friends for fun. it is supposed to be fun, not too serious. but information has to be simplified and categorised. maybe only the most basic is mentioned.

a) let GD group mates try reading their own palm on the spot. everyone try to figure everyone’s out.

format:
those big long exhibition boards which explains the different kind of palm lines etc.

b) let them try it on other people

format:
some pocket size book. Or A3 paper that can be folded to pocket size. the instruction bible!

2.

do readings for the whole class. let them experience. no guarantee on the accuracy. (learnt it in a few days, what can you expect. hahaha.) but they wouldn’t know how to do it.

a) let them see everyone’s readings.

format:
those big long exhibition boards. written on every board’s everyone’s fortune. will probably see many many palms and description at the side. description also to be printed out on paper for them to bring back. (disclaimers included)

3.

yes i know, i said 2.

combine both!
do a mini pocket size manual, clear and concise so everyone can go around and try on their friends and do palm reading for 3 to 5 people from our class. (accuracy not guaranteed)

Okie! I need a vote before Sunday! Please comment if you happen to read this!

Okie. Start with the posters design first i guess. *facepalms*

2 directions.

Either

Do an exhibition, giving very simple instructions about how to do readings for yourself. it can be for fun. fortune telling with simple props and fun can be chosen.

Or

Do a systems projects of sorts. Go scan group mates’ palm or take a photo of everyone’s face and do face or palm readings. Print out the readings with everyone’s photos o_o (okie, i need to check how many people we have in our group)

Just wanted to write down the possible questions that can be raised, allowing it to go through my mind before i really decide on a final one.

The questions are all in random order. not in order of importance.

1. How to make people gain interest in fortune telling other than just all fun and games, but also learn something about it. By simplifying them and showing important aspects. Purpose is to educate and inform.

2. Recreate a new fortune telling experience by creating new card games or new fortune telling that deals with chance. For example, Check your handphone, today is the 4th of the month, so we add up the numbers of your 4th contact number. 1 represents … 2 represents … 3 represents…

3. How to make them see fortune-telling in a different light. For example, make a GIGANTIC BIG BIG BIG FORTUNE COOKIE that vomits out random fortune slips. Or GIGANTIC COINS that people supposed to toss.

4. The topic of Self-fulfilling prophecy so that it does not happen. The problems lies in how humans interpret anything in life. At least 50% of the time, the brain are making guesses. Including the things we see. So yes, we can be ‘seeing’ things.

5. Apathy towards fortune telling. The I-Don’t-Care Attitude. Thus coming up with a quick and easy, clear and concise instruction booklet. Make it simple and interesting.

6. Many does know about horoscopes and zodiac etc, but the fortune telling lost it’s qualities because of some misconceptions. So i can take this chance to change misconceptions.

7. Prove readings through statistics. For example, Aries are supposed to be stubborn, headstrong, energetic, with leadership qualities. Survey to see how true it is. Give statistics.

8. Remake the whole fortune telling experience. Decorate the place to get a FEEEELING of fortune telling.

9. Change people’s perceptions about fortune telling. People think it’s intriguing, some totally skeptical. Maybe it is possible to do something fun but make them think.

10. Simply mix fun and messages

11. People thinks that Tarots are serious and evil. Maybe the tarot story can be illustrated, in a cute and fun way for better understanding.

12. Touch on the topic on how people perceive images. Different opinions and misconceptions.

13. Why do people do fortune telling? For fun or to answer questions? People’s mindset towards fortune telling. Why seek for it?

You can find your 4 pillar and 8 characters from this website.

=============

The ancient Chinese YIN-YANG scholars believed that three are two natural, complementary and contradictory forces in our universe. The scholars named them as YIN and YANG. YIN represents the female, negative, darkness, softness, moisture, night-time, even numbers and docile aspects of things. YANG represents the male, positive, brightness, hardness, dryness, day-time. odd numbers and dominant aspects. YIN and YANG are continually in the state of flux and always looking for the BALANCE point. One moves , the other responses. Therefore, ancient scholars treated this natural phenomenon as a natural universal law.

These scholars also believed that our universe consisted of five basic elements, which are Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth (Soil). Everything, including humans, in the universe (between Heaven and Earth) must have a relationship with these five elements. So they tried to apply the five elements not only to every physical thing in the world, but also to the Colors, Directions, Seasons and Sounds. They even applied to the Years, Months, Days, Hours, Minutes and Seconds of the Chinese Calendar. Now, people are able to know their five-element weights from their birth date and time. Based on the combination of these five-element weights plus the concept of the natural phenomenon, they can tell the rise and fall of human destiny (fate) cycle.

FIVE ELEMENTS does not only mean metal, water, wood, fire and soil. The “element” in Chinese also means MOVEMENT, CHANGEABLE and DEVELOPMENT. These elements have their Ying and Yang sides too. They are moving, waning, waxing and changing all the time. Just like Ying and Yang, the movements of five elements are slow and stable when they are in kind of balance. If they are out of balance, then the movements are unstable and unpredictable. When a person is in a stable (five-element) environment, he should live peacefully. When a person is in an unpredictable environment, he is easily out of control. A person will feel lucky when everything is under control. A person will feel bad luck when everything is out of control. If you want to be a lucky person, you have to move to an environment to bring your five elements into balance.

In the fortune-telling system, we want to use metal, water, wood, fire and earth as the five elements to explain everything. Metal stands for mineral, gold, jewelry, iron, rock or something hard. Water stands for liquid or something cold. Wood stands for tree or something to do with wood. Fire stands for Sun, fire, heat, light or something hot. Earth stands for soil, dust or ground. There are affinity and enmity relationships between five elements.

The affinity relationship means supporting, helping, producing, etc.
Water can help tree (Wood) grow.
Wood can help Fire to burn.
Fire can help to produce dust (Earth).
Earth can help mineral (Metal) to form.
Metal can hold Water.
We can say that :-

Water is the supporting element of Wood. Wood can release the power of Water.
Wood is the supporting element of Fire. Fire can release the power of Wood.
Fire is the supporting element of Earth. Earth can release the power of Fire.
Earth is the supporting element of Metal. Metal can release the power of Earth.
Metal is the supporting element of Water. Water can release the power of Metal.

The enmity relationship means fighting, conflicting, rejecting, etc.

Water can extinguish Fire, but Fire might evaporate Water.
Wood can break the ground (Earth), but Earth can buries Wood too.
Fire can melt Metal, but Metal might not melt before Fire is extinguished.
Earth can absorb Water, but Water can cover the land (Earth).
Metal can cut Wood, but Metal might become dull before breaking Wood.
We can say that :-

Water and Fire are enemies. Water overwhelms the movement of Fire.
Wood and Earth are enemies. Wood overwhelms the movement of Earth.
Fire and Metal are enemies. Fire overwhelms the movement of Metal.
Earth and Water are enemies. Earth overwhelms the movement of Water.
Metal and Wood are enemies. Metal overwhelms the movement of Wood.

Since the ancient scholars apply the Five-Element theory to Chinese Calendar, so we can convert each birthday and time using Chinese Fortune Calendar.

There are four columns and eight Chinese characters. Chinese call this chart Four Pillar or Eight Characters. The Year column is the information about your ancestor or early age. The Month column is the information about your parents or growing age. The Day column is the information about you (upper character) and your spouse (lower character) or adult age. The Hour column is the information about kids or late age. Because the Day column represents you, you are black cow (water cow), not brown tiger from year.

From the Chinese Fortune Calendar, we can convert Eight Characters into Five Elements.

  • The first column in the chart is YOU. YOU is the element of your same type. So YOU includes you and your brothers (sisters) and friends.
  • The second column is KIDS. KIDS is the element that comes out from YOU. So KIDS includes your children, your expression to the outside world or something that comes out from your mind or body.
  • This third column is MONEY. MONEY is made by something coming out from your brain or body. That’s why MONEY hurts your body. MONEY is our enemy. Sometimes MONEY has the information about our father, because he brings the money to our family.
  • This forth column is JOB. JOB is something that gives YOU pressure or trouble. So JOB is your job, something that may make you nervous and sometimes is your children (i.e. You have the pressure to support them). That’s why JOB hurts you. JOB is our enemy.
  • This fifth column is MOM. MOM includes your mother, baby sitter, mentor and the persons support or protect you. So MOM is our best friend.

To Find the Lucky Elements

There are many ways (theories) to do this. Here are some simple ways. The basic concept is balancing the five elements.

Smallest Score

Find the smallest score for the lucky element. Metal has only 18. So Metal is the lucky element.

Foe and Friend

Foe is Money and Job, which give you pressure all the time. Mom is your friend always. If the scores from Foe are much greater than the scores from You and your friend, then You and Mom are the lucky elements. If the scores from Foe are much less than the scores from You and your friend, then Money and Job are the lucky elements. The total of Metal and Water is 18+49 = 67 and the total of Fire and Soil is 30+226 = 256. Therefore the lucky elements are Metal and Water.

Cold and Hot

If the scores from Metal and Water are much greater than the scores from any other elements, then the combination of five elements is too cold and the lucky element is Fire. If the scores from Fire and Earth are much greater than the scores from any other elements, then the combination of five elements is too hot and the lucky element is Water.

Bottleneck

If the score of Job is much greater than the score of You, then the Mom is the lucky element to release the power of Job and gives you more strength. If the score of You is much greater than the score of Money, then the Kid the lucky element to release the energy of You and makes more Money for you.

Chinese Fortune-Telling begins from here

If the power of Money and Job is much greater than the power of You and your Mom. You were born poor, because on the date of your birth You cannot handle the power of Money. You can be richer when your lucky elements come into your life.

When you find the lucky elements in your columns of Year and Month, you were born into a good family, have a good relationship with them and your parents support you in your early age. When you find a lucky element in the column of spouse (Day), you spouse helps you in your career, business or financial area. When you find the lucky elements in the Hour column, your children will do good in their life and/or you will have a nice late years.

If the power of You and Mom is much greater than anything else, you are a person with strong will and good health. You can be a leader, because you can handle the pressure, but you might hurt people like your spouse or father easily.

If the power of You and Mom is much less than anything else, you are weak on determination and easily get sick. You should be a team player. You shouldn’t do business on your own, because you cannot handle the pressure unless the lucky elements come into your life all the time.

All the concepts here are based on the affinity and enmity charts of the five elements. You can think more clearly by following the nature law of the universe. To search for your lucky elements (Years, days), go to Five-Element Menu to get it. Remember you have your lucky elements and you have your bad-omen elements too. You can find your bad years from the Five-Element Menu too. To find the related lucky stuff is from Five-Element Chart.

Something interesting. East and West combined. In this website. Not much for now. I will find out more about it in the future. Maybe not for this project.

After gathering feedback, i’ve gained a lot of new directions. One of the comments that really struck me is what Kasxier said about chinese fortunetelling is being neglected as compared to the western ones.

And especially after the recent debate over the Chinese Zodiac at Wikipedia (please check the discussion page). I quote comments that are written there making comparisons between chinese and western fortunetelling/divination.

Chinese is confusing. I prefer Western Astrology. It doesn’t lie.

So narrowing it in the sense of Chinese Fortune-telling might be feasible.

But right now, anything can be possible.

Maybe i should just ask everyone to scan their palms and i post up readings during the exhibition. XD

I’m trying to get my Murphy’s law book back from my friend. Apparently, it has something that one can relate to as self-fufilling prophecy that might interest everyone.

Let’s just start by looking at the image.

Many people misinterpret the Death card as something bad. This is one of the most common misconception about the Death card.

It is true that the Death card can mean death of a person (for example, a relative etc). But more importantly, the death card is an indication of change. The end of something and the start of another.

Death is just a natural and important, if sad part of an on-going cycle. Winter comes so that there can be a spring, and we can only appreciate what we have when we know that there is loss. The Death card signals such things. This is a time of change. Time for something to end; but time also for something new to begin.

The meanings of each Tarot card can be very easy to remember just by looking at the image.

Though it does show the skeleton and the body lying on the gound. One should also notice that the skeleton knight is riding on a white horse. White symbolises purity and innocence. At the right side of the card also shows the rising sun, which can be interpreted as a new beginning.

Quote from Aeclectic Tarot

The Death card indicates this transition from lower to higher to highest. This is a card of humility, and it may indicate the Querent as being brought low, but only so that they can then go higher than they ever have before.

The Story of Fool

It was said that the Tarot cards shows the story of the Fool’s journey. And this is the part where the Fool meets Death.

Having left the tree from where he hung, the Fool moves carefully through a fallow field, head still clearing from visions. The air is cold and wintry, the trees bare. Before him, he sees, rising with the sun, a skeleton in black armor mounted on a white horse. He recognizes it as Death. As it stops before him, he humbly asks, “Have I died?” He feels, in fact, rather empty and desolate. And the Skeleton answers, “Yes, in a way. You sacrificed your old world, your old self. Both are gone, dead.” The Fool reflects on that, “How sad.” Death acknowledges this with a nod. “Yes, but it is the only way to be reborn. A new Sun is rising, and it is, for you, a time of great transformation.” As Death rides away, the Fool can feel the truth in those words. He, too, feels like a skeleton, all that he was stripped away. This, he understands, is how all great transformations start, by stripping things to the bone, and building fresh upon the bare foundations.

If you ask me what are the cards that show more of a negative connotation, it would be these

Fortune Telling as a Form of Performance Art

This piece was originally performed in the Nadadada performance art festival in 2000. A roving mannequin fortune teller based on Zoltar from the movie Big cornered unsuspecting art patrons to present them with “fortunes” stating “The future is up to you.” This video is set to “Pour le pizzicato” from Etudes for String Orchestra by Frank Martin as performed for Stratos.
